Thunder Begin Title Defense with Dramatic Overtime Triumph
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joined the Thunder back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player scored the decisive baskets deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the Houston Rockets.
The reigning MVP scored 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the titleholders a positive start.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, played a major role together with the game's hero.
"Determination and defense," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, good luck or misfortune. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."
Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's championship banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were awarded their championship rings.
The Thunder beat the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the team relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the chance to get some payback on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was not enough to prevent his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from sciatica.
